Israel’s Eurovision Winning Song Threatened by Lawsuit

Universal Music Group is threatening to sue the creators of Israel’s winning entry to the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest over copyright infringement, according to a Tuesday report by Israeli entertainment news program Good Evening with Guy Pines. Universal is alleging that the Israeli song, “Toy,” is plagiarising the song “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes. Universal reportedly sent a pre-suit letter to Doron Medalie and Stav Beger, who wrote Toy, which was performed by Israeli singer Netta Barzilai.

On Tuesday, Israel tanked plans to split national broadcaster Kan, citing Eurovision regulations. The planned split could have jeopardized the country’s role as host of the international song contest in 2019. Should Universal sue, Israel’s Eurovision win could be revoked.
