ELTA Systems Ltd., a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI), will provide the U.S Army with radars for tanks. Called WindGuard (ELM-2133) Active Protection Radar, the systems will be supplied as part of a deal to sell active tank protection systems for the Abrams Main Battle Tanks by Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd.

The contract was sketched has been awarded to Elta by Virginia- headquartered defense contractor DRS Technologies, Inc., also known as Leonardo DRS.ELTA systems did not disclose financial details of the deal but did state the radars will be manufactured in Israel.

The WindGuard radar continually scans for anti-missile threats, including anti-tank rockets or guided missiles. If a threat is detected by the radar, the WindGuard simultaneously provides an early warning to the crew and activates the system to intercept and neutralize the threat. The system is currently in use in Israeli military "Merkava“ tanks and "Namer“ armored vehicles.

Last month, Rafael demonstrated the system in its field experiments in the south of Israel, in the presence of officials from the U.S., and NATO. Rafael is anticipating initial contracts with countries that took part in the demonstration in 2019.
