Tech vs. Talmud: A balancing act between two worlds

Ysrael Gurt, Co-Founder and CTO at Reflectiz, discussed some of the tensions between Israel’s high-tech sector and the Haredi community

“The Haredi Society is 14% of the Israel society, but there are some limitations to the ability to bring everyone to high-tech,” explained Ysrael Gurt, Co-Founder and CTO at Reflectiz a company that helps companies with their third-party app security. Despite learning how to program at the age of 13, Gurt is still cautious about the integration of the Haredi community into Israel’s high-tech scene. “Since the Haredi guys are the only guys in Israel who are learning Talmud and Gemara, some of them for sure need to remain and be the best in Gemara.”

For much of the Haredi community, the conflict exists on whether efforts should be made to help encourage this integration into Startup Nation or to continue to avoid it. Gurt admitted that he is teaching his son only the Talmud since “there are a lot of people in Israel that can do high-tech but there are not a lot of people that can do Talmud.”
