“The last couple of weeks were a wake-up call for the tech industry”

“The last couple of weeks were a wake-up call for the tech industry, in the sense that traditionally you could find people who were thinking about risk management in the financial world or in financial services,” explained Efraim Chalamish, Professor at New York University and Senior Advisor and Institute Fellow at Kroll. “Now I think all types of tech companies and investors in the sector realize they need to approach risk management from a more holistic perspective, whether it's protected in data, data governance, financial valuation, or whether its connectivity with other parts of the economy.” Chalamish calls it “a systematic issue that technology companies and the investors in the sector should be aware of.”

Chalamish joined CTech during Mind The Tech in London at a time when Israel was facing multiple crises that have far-reaching consequences on its financial stability and democracy.

“I think for a long time, Israeli tech saw itself as part of the global economy, whether it comes to technology partnerships or financial markets,” he continued. “Now I think the Israeli tech industry thinks a little bit differently on the last crisis in the sense that they are looking for ways to detach itself a little bit from what is happening in the world. We see the strength of the financial banks in Israel, we see how many Israeli tech investors focus on making sure the startups being invested in are not impacted by the uncertainty and instability of the markets. We see more focus on the Israeli sector as a standalone sector unrelated to markets around the world."
