"Israel needs to move from being a startup nation to an AI nation," said Alon Haimovich, Israeli Country GM at Microsoft, speaking at the Calcalist and Bank Leumi Mind the Tech conference in New York. "Israel can be at the heart of the artificial intelligence revolution. Much can be achieved with the help of advanced AI capabilities. Entire industries can be elevated to new levels. Many solutions lie ahead of us, but we must first remember who we are before deciding on those solutions.

"I want to share a few points of pride. Israel ranks second in GDP in the Middle East. This is thanks to the talent that fuels our local high-tech industry. We must continue to invest in this area and not become complacent. While we are not yet leaders in AI, we have the potential to be, and the reason for this is that AI will bring trillions into the global economy. This technology has the power to change societies and the way we live.

"Let’s ask ourselves what we’ve learned from history. The failure of many powers to adopt advanced technologies eventually led to their decline.

"In my opinion, there are four foundations for advancing in AI. The first is access to advanced software and hardware infrastructure, regardless of its physical location. At Microsoft, we have massive hardware and software infrastructures that Israel can connect to, providing the country with the computing power it currently lacks. The second is government support, which will create regulation that removes barriers. This should not be seen as a political issue but as a crucial step to using the state as a tool to advance AI. The third is overcoming technological barriers, which have traditionally not been an issue in Israel. However, Israel now needs to transition from a startup nation to an AI nation. The fourth is education and technology training. This is the foundation of innovation."
