Tenable, a leading American cybersecurity company, has appointed Steve Vintz and Mark Thurmond as permanent co-Chief Executive Officers. The move follows a months-long interim period during which the two executives jointly led the company in the wake of founder and former CEO Amit Yoran’s death earlier this year.

The decision, announced Tuesday, comes after what the board described as an “extensive” global search for potential candidates. Ultimately, Tenable’s directors opted to endorse the duo already at the helm, citing their complementary strengths and success in guiding the company through a difficult and transformative chapter.

The board also announced plans to appoint both men to Tenable’s board of directors following the company’s annual shareholder meeting in May.

“Mark and Steve have demonstrated exceptional leadership and alignment during their time as interim co-CEOs,” said Art Coviello, Chairman of Tenable’s board and a longtime figure in the cybersecurity space. “We are confident in their ability to continue driving innovation and long-term value for all stakeholders.”

Vintz, who has served as the company’s CFO since 2014, will continue in that role while overseeing product, cybersecurity, corporate development, and administrative functions. Thurmond, Tenable’s COO since 2020, will be responsible for go-to-market functions including sales, marketing, and customer success. The company has begun a search for a new CFO to replace Vintz once the transition is complete.

A new structure after an industry loss

The appointment follows the untimely passing of Amit Yoran, a widely respected figure in the global cyber community. An Israeli-American entrepreneur and U.S. Army graduate, Yoran previously led companies such as NetWitness and Riptech, which helped shape how organizations understand and mitigate cyber threats.

Before stepping down in December to focus on his health, Yoran wrote to Tenable employees expressing full confidence in Vintz and Thurmond as his temporary successors. “We have much to do and there is no time to waste,” he wrote. “I have complete trust in their ability—and yours—to keep our mission and transformation moving forward.”

Since then, the co-CEOs have expanded Tenable’s customer presence and led a steady evolution of its product portfolio. The company continues to pursue its long-standing mission of providing organizations with real-time visibility and actionable insights into cybersecurity risk across modern digital infrastructures.

Israeli connections and forward momentum

During their interim tenure, Vintz and Thurmond also completed the acquisition of Israeli startup Vulcan Cyber, bringing the company’s total number of Israeli acquisitions to five, including Indegy, Cymptom, Ermetic, and Eureka Security.

Tenable, which serves more than 44,000 customers globally, is best known for its exposure management platform Tenable One. The company has increasingly positioned itself as a leader in cloud security, critical infrastructure protection, and AI-powered cyber threat detection.

In a joint statement, the newly appointed co-CEOs said they were “honored” by the opportunity to lead the company through its next chapter. “We have tremendous belief in Tenable’s mission, team, and market position,” they said. “We’re excited to build on our momentum and deliver meaningful outcomes for our customers, employees and shareholders.”
