"Telecom companies and NTT in terms of content are facing dramatic challenges of a jump in internet traffic. The amount of data in networks will jump 90 times and internet traffic will jump 190 times by 2025," said Oka Atsuko, Head of Research and Development Planning at the Japanese telecom giant NTT, speaking at Calcalist's Israel-Japan Conference in Tokyo. "We are seen as a local company in Japan, but we have extensive international operations with 900 subsidiaries and 333,000 employees worldwide. Two years ago we also established our innovation hub in Israel as part of the effort to face the challenges of the future."

In her lecture, Atsuko presented the largest and most ambitious project that NTT is currently leading, which is the establishment of the innovative IOWN network based on an innovative optical and wireless network. "This is an innovative network that should reduce electricity consumption and at the same time enable fast communication in accordance with today's increasing demands. The network is photonic, which means it converts electrical signals to optical and thus enables faster traffic in the networks," Atsuko explained. "This is a very ambitious project and we understand that NTT will not be able to deal with it alone, that's why we cooperate with many companies and many academic institutions to promote the effort.”
