UPDATE 8:30am ET: AWS is saying it was seeing "significant signs of recovery" for some impacted services. "Most requests should now be succeeding. We continue to work through a backlog of queued requests," it said in the latest update on the outage posted on its status page.

Users have reported widespread outages across several major online platforms, including Amazon’s cloud unit (AWS), Robinhood, Snapchat, and the AI platform Perplexity.

The disruptions are believed to stem from Amazon’s cloud services. The company confirmed that multiple services are experiencing outages and stated it is working to identify the cause and resolve the issue. Amazon added that it will provide updates as necessary.

AWS. AWS. AWS.

Reports indicate that the outages affected Amazon’s e-commerce site, Prime Video, and the personal assistant Alexa, as well as PayPal’s Venmo payment transfer service. Other platforms impacted include Fortnite, Duolingo, Canva, and Roblox, according to Downdetector, a website that monitors network disruptions.

Amazon Web Services hosts a wide range of internet infrastructure, allowing companies to rent computing power and servers to run their applications and websites. Any issue with AWS can therefore ripple across the web, disrupting services not directly affiliated with Amazon.

AWS is the leading provider of such cloud services. In 2024, the division generated $108 billion, making up the majority of Amazon’s revenue.
