“We change cancer from a fatal disease to a chronic ailment”

Ofer Shalev, Founder & CEO at New Phase, spoke to CTech during Mind the Tech NY about New Phase and the technology behind the company

“New Phase was founded nine years ago following the death of my partner, Dr. Rafi Hof’s mother Sarah, and delivers a solution for Stage 4 cancer patients. Usually, at that stage of the disease, patients are exhausted from chemotherapy, radiation therapy and even biologic drugs and the cancer cells and tumors spread in the body. At this stage usually even oncologists give up,” explained Ofer Shalev, Founder and CEO at New Phase. “Our challenge was treating those patients and reducing the cancer mass from Stage 4 to Stage 2 so that patients can live with a better quality of life.” Shalev was speaking to CTech during the Mind the Tech NY Conference.

When asked about the technology behind the idea Shalev replied: “The technology has two components: the first is irradiation of electromagnetic radiation which delivers electromagnetic fields in the torso area and the second, is nanoparticles infused into the body which have multi cores of iron oxide. Four hours after injection we irradiate the torso which heats the nanoparticles. We have learned from the literature that cancer cells are more reluctant to hypothermia than normal cells and tend to collapse at temperatures of 41-45 degrees celsius while normal cells can survive at 55 degrees. Our nano particles reach 50 degrees therefore, they destroy only the cancer cells.

“New Phase has completed the pre-clinical study with great results. We have authorization in Israel to begin stage 1 meaning safety endotoxicity. We have treated six patients and the results, in terms of safety, are very good and we have begun to see the first results of our proof of concept, meaning how well the nanoparticles destroy tumors in patients bodies.”
